Congestion on Saskatoon streets is going to get worse before it gets better. The Traffic Bridge has been closed until further notice to vehicles and pedestrians following preliminary inspection results received Tuesday.
The bridge, which connects Victoria Avenue to downtown Saskatoon, was undergoing a comprehensive inspection beginning Monday. According to City of Saskatoon officials, "results indicate that deterioration under the bridge needs further inspection." The bridge was closed completely mid-Tuesday afternoon.
"We knew there was corrosion under there but based on the limits and the extent of the deterioration, and in the interest of public safety, we are closing the bridge indefinitely," said Infrastructure Services general manager Mike Gutek.
According to Gutek, inspectors were unable to certify that the lower steel structural members inspected this week were safe. The inspection will continue this week, with more results becoming known next week.
